identification: Large, flat and round, sometimes tending to conic. Vaguely ribbed. The base colour is yellow covered with broken, wide stripes of bright red. Develops a thick bloom when ripe. The stem is somewhat short and slender and set in a wide, round and russeted cavity. The eye is small and closed, set in a shallow basin.
characteristics: Flesh is creamy white, stained red next to the skin. Coarse?grained and firm. Brisk and somewhat sweet with mild flavour. Keeps about two months in storage.
uses: A cooking apple that holds its shape. Sometimes eaten out of hand but is commonly too tart. Also used in cider making..
origins: Probably arose in Somerset. First recorded in 1819.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. Ready for harvest in the first half of the FOURTH period.
vulnerabilities: Very resistant to scab.
