Hitchin Pippin
identification: Medium size. Oblong. The base colour is green over which are red stripes and patches of russet.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish and crisp. Juicy/Dry and sweet. Does not keep well.
origins: The origin of this apple named after the Hertfordshire (UK) town where it was first described is obscure although there is some conjecture that it might actuallly be a sport of the Bramley Pippin. This Hertfordshire variety was documented in 1896 as growing in the area of Hitchin, ?????????? (UK). Unfortunately, the has undergone some confusion since the two trees obtained by the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in 1970 had been mislabelled for one reason or another and the grafting mater send out for propogation was, for some time, not the Hitchin Pippin. However, it seems that three old trees were subsequently identified as being true Hitchin Hitchin Pippin 1896
