Hercules

Hercules
type: Culinary, Dessert, Pie, Sauce
synonyms: Charlotte, Marketed as Ballerina Charlotte.
summary: One of several columnar apples developed by the East Malling Institute of Horticultural Research, the Hercules apple forms a compact stem along which the fruit is clustered. This cultivar lends itself to pies and sauces, but can also be eaten out of hand if you like them tart.
identification: Medium size, round to round-conic and slightly ribbed. Fruit base colour is light green, blushed red on the sun exposed faces. The crown is distinctly knobbed. The calyx is medium size and open, set in a wide and deep basin. The stem is short and medium thick, set in a deep and funnel-shaped basin. Some russet can be present around the stem. The surface of the apple develops a greasy feel as it ripenbs.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured. Crisp. Sweet-tart. Slow to brown when exposed to air.
origins: Developed at the East Malling Research Station in 1975 by crossing Wijcik Spur McIntosh with pollen from Greensleeves and selected in 1982 as SA 219/25 from among the seedlings that grew from the breeding. Evaluated at the 1988 National Fruit Trials at Brogdale Farm in Kent (U.K.). Released in 1998.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, very compact columnar, spur bearer. Tolerates growing in pots but needs shelter from punishing winds. Requires minimal pruning. Grows best on MM106 rootstock. The life-span of the cultivar is set at 12 years or more.
