identification: Moderately large to large. Round conic, often lopsided and sometimes flattened. The skin is smooth and somewhat glossy. Straw yellow when first harvested, maturing to golden yellow in storage. Striped bright red on the sun-exposed face. Some russeting. Lenticels are light-coloured and barely noticeable. The calyx is open and moderately large, set in a deep and wide, puckered basin. The stem is thin and short, set in a deep and wide, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained and crisp. Sweet-tart and somewhat spicy. Mild flavour.
uses: Eating out of hand, cooking and juicing.
origins: Likely developed in the Westphalia region of northwestern Germany and first described by pomologist August F.A. Diel in 1828. There is no record of its parentage.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading spur bearer. Bears heavy crops. Fruit tends to drop prematurely if the soil is too dry.
