synonyms: Gould. This variety is often listed as being a mutation of McIntosh which is actually the Hampshire Mac,
identification: Round tending to ovate and usually symmetric. At full ripeness, the sin is washed to 90 per cent with burgundy red. A moderate number of of depressed, light coloured lenticels are scattered over the smooth skin. Some surface russeting can occur as well as russet around the stem cavity and onto the shoulder. The stem is medium length and thickness, set in a wide and moderately deep cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy white, fine grained, firm, crisp and juicy. Sweet, spritely and becomes quite aromatic when allowed to ripen fully on the tree. Keeps three months cold storage.

origins: This variety originated as a seedling found by Erick Leadbeater in 1978 growing in his orchard at Gould Hill Road in Hopkinton Township, Merrimack County, New Hampshire (USA). The block where it was found had Delicious, McIntosh and Cortland apples but it is not known whether the seedling originated from any of these. Between 1982 and 1987, both scions and buds were grafted to other trees and, in 1993 he applied for a patent on the cultivar.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Semi spur. It starts to bear fruit quite young and produces on spurs that develop on two?year and older wood. Thinning to one or two apples per spur following fruit set is needed to prevent the from bearing in alternate years.
