summary: A large, culinary apple originating in Kent and continues to be available in some British nurseries.
identification: Large, round to round-conic. Base colour is pale yellow, sometimes washed pale red on the sun-exposed face. Abundant, large, dark lenticels. The calyx is somewhat small, partly open and set in a shallow, small, puckered basin. The stem is very short, stout and set in a shallow, narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Very sharp.
uses: Produces a sweet, honey-coloured sauce, sweet and flavourful. The acidity of the apple almost completely disappears in the process but the fruit maintains its shape in spite of the cooking.
origins: Originated by Major William J. Hambling in Dunstable, Bedfordshire (U.K.) in 1893 NFC Dunstable, Bedfordshire and introduced in 1894 by Bunyard Nursery of Maidstone in 1894. Possibly a chance seedling cultivated by the finder. A large yellow skinned apple with an occasional orange flush. Coarse, firm acidic flesh.
