summary: Once grown extensively in the southern United States as an excellent summer apple for fresh eating, pies and apple sauce, but pre-empted in the mid-1900 by market apples such as the Red Delicious. Still grown today by hobby orchardists.
identification: Medium size. Round to round conic. Yellow base colour, washed red with darker striping on the sun-exposed face. Abundant lenticels are scattered over the surface. Stem is medium-long and set in a russeted cavity.
characteristics: Flesh is just slightly yellowish. Coarse-grained. Mildly aromatic.
origins: Found growing as a one of several chance seedling just downstream from an old apple orchard near Lavonia, Georgia (U.S.A.) in the mid-1800s. Cultivated and promoted by dentist and avid horticulturalist Nichodemus Hackworth of Morgan County in neighbouring Alabama (U.S.A.).
cultivation: Vigorous, upright tree.
cold storage: Does not keep well.
