synonyms: Fall Queen, Gros Pommier, Hass, Hoss, Maryland Queen, mistakenly also called Horse, though this is actually a different cultivar, see Horse .
identification: Medium plus size, conical in shape with somewhat noticable ribbing. Skin is smooth and thin, but tough. Base colour is green to golden yellow, extensively covered with bright red over which are splashes and stripes of deep carmine. Speckles are light coloured or russetted. The stem is short and thick, often reddish brown.
characteristics: White, fragrant, juicy and firm flesh. Often stained red under the skin.
uses: Best eaten fresh
origins: 1800s on the farm of Gabriel Cerre of St. Louis, Missouri and well recognized by the 1870s.
cultivation: Very hardy, early ripening. Bears annually. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 5 to 8.
