Gros Fenouillet Gris

synonyms: Canada Gris, Grise du Canada, Gros Fenouillet, Monstrueuse du Canada, Reinette Douce, Reinette Gris du Canada. There is considerable confusion in regards this variety since a number of sources also list these names as synonyms for the Canada Reinette. Furthermore, Leathercoat is not a synonym for this variety, but rather for the Royal Russet.
identification: Large. Round?conic tending to round, often lop? sided. The skin is a dull, greenish yellow colour over which is a heavy, cinnamon coloured russet that covers almost all of the surface. The eye is large and varies between open and half open, set in an irregular basin surrounded by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep and moderately wide cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish white, fine?grained and tender. Somewhat juicy and sweet, nutty. Almost no acidity. Keeps three months in cold storage.
uses: An excellent dessert apple, especially after it has been in storage for several weeks. Also outstanding for pastries and pies, becoming sweet and flavourful while holding its shape.
origins: Originally known as the Reinette Canada Gris, but renamed the Gros Fenouillet Gris. It has been documented since 1805 when it was recorded as one of several varieties growing in the gardens of the Mus um d’Histoire Naturelle in
