identification: Medium size, round conic with faint ribbing on the faces. The base colour is yellow over which there may be a bright red blush on the sun-exposed face. The stem is short and slender, set in a narrow and rather deep cavity. The calyx is small, closed to somewhat open and set in a small and medium deep basin which can be vaguely plaited. Lenticels are few in number, light coloured and usually indented. The skin develops a slight bloom at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained. tender and crisp. Juicy to very juicy and sprightly in flavour. Tends to brown slightly when exposed to air.
origins: Native to Lithuania and Russia. Sent to the U.S.A. in 1870 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in an effort to establish a viable market variety. Described under the name Longfield by S.A. Beach in his "The Apples of New York" (Published 1904).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Round and drooping growth habit when young, more upright as it matures. Bears early, heavy crops and needs post-bloom thinning to maintain fruit size. Bears fruit on primarily on the tips of one year shoots but also on spurs.
