identification: Medium size. Round and somewhat flattened, with angular sides. Prominent ribs and ridges at the crown. The base colour is lemon yellow, blushed red with russeted networking on the sun-exposed face. The calyx is closed and set in a deep and funnel shaped, puckered basin which is surrounded with a ridged crown. The stem is short and set in a deep and narrow, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, tender. Somewhat dry, very sweet and slightly tart. Fragrant with honeyed flavours.
uses: Cooking and cider Also highly regarded for pies and tarts. Makes good dried apple rings as well as a fragrant apple jelly.
origins: It is said to have been a popular cider variety in the 16th Century and was widely grown in the Herefordshire region of England. British pomologist Robert Hogg described it in his 1886 edition of "The Apple and Pear as Vintage Fruits" as follows: "The Gennet Moyle was the favourite apple in the Cider Orchards of the 15th century, and continued to do so until Lord Scudamore's Redstreak supplemented it in popular esteem. Its history is lost; but its name signifies a hybrid scion... It is still to be found in the old orchards of Herefordshire, though it has now become scarce." Fortunately, that downward trend was stemmed and the cultivar is available from select nurseries where apples are cultivated.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading. Partial tip bearer. Biennial.
cold storage: Does not store well, going mealy before a month is lapsed, but should be picked just before fully ripe and matured a week or so after harvest to obtain the best flavour and optimum sweetness.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab.
harvest: In the middle of the fourth period. Fruit holds well on the tree when ripe.
juice character: Ranked a vintage cider variety. Produces a light, somewhat sweet cider.
