Geheimrat Doktor Oldenburg

identification: Medium size. Round cylindric. The smooth, thin skin is greenish yellow, covered with a red flush and scattered stripes. A thin russet netting sometime covers the basin and shoulder. The stem is varies from short and stout to long and slender, set in a deep and moderately narrow cavity. The calyx is large and half open, set in a rather deep, but wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish and somewhat darker under the skin. Soft and tender. Juicy and sweet-tart. Mildly aromatic.
uses: Dessert apple. Also used for making apple juice.
origins: Minister von Hammerstein crossed with Baumanns Reinette, raised 1897, Fruit, Vine, Horticulture Research Station, Geisenheim, Rhine, Germany known as the H heren Lehranstalt fur Obstbau at the time.
cultivation: Weakly vigorous, upright spreading, somewhat dwarfing tree. Requires fertile soil and fertilization and the fruit develops best when sheltered from the wind. Best suited to gardens.
cold storage: Keeps about a month.
harvest: Early in the fourth period. Tends to drop fruit pre-harvest.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
