identification: Very small, round-conic. Base colour is pale green over which is a rough, bronze russet. The stem is short and medium stout, set in a narrow and shallow cavity. The calyx is small, tightly closed and set in a shallow and wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, sometimes greenish. Fine-grained. Dry, tannic, not edible.
origins: Grown in the 1930s by Max Bazzanella in Mineral, Virginia (U.S.A.). Introduced in 1947. The late Lee Calhoun suggested in his "Old Southern Apples" (published 2010) that this may the same apple as the Lee's Frost Proof which was sold in the very early 1900s at the J. Van Lindley Nursery in Greenboro, North Carolina (U.S.A.).
