summary: An excellent dessert apple, well flavoured and sweet, that originated in Holland sometime during the 1700s. Also known as Aagt.
identification: Small to medium, conic to long conic. Greenish yellow base colour washed deep red on the sun exposed face and marked with a network of russetting. The calyx is small and closed or partly open, set in a shallow basin. The stem is short and somewhat slender, set in a narrow and shallow cavity which is russeted, with rays extending out toward the shoulder. Light coloured lenticels. Rough skin.
characteristics: Pale greenish flesh, fine-grained, crisp. Juicy, sweet and aromatic with prominent aroma of cinnamon.
origins: Believed to have originated in the province of Groningen, in Holland. First described in 1760 by Herman Knoup in "Pomology" under the name Kronapfel. At one time grown commercially, but now relegated to hobby orchards.
