French Codlin

no image available
type: Cooking
synonyms: Leicester-Burton Pippin. The Dutch Codlin is also known by this synonym but it is not the same apple.
summary: A small cooking apple grown in Europe during the 1800s but it has likely disappeared.
identification: Medium size or smaller, conic to long conic. Some vague ribbing on the side and distinctly waisted at the crown. The skin is smooth and the colour of straw, sometimes with a faint red blush on the sun-exposed face. The stem is short and set in a narrow and very shallow cavity. The calyx is small and closed, set in a moderately deep and narrow basin which is surrounded by a knobbed crown.
characteristics: The flesh is white, tender, juicy and brisk. Mild vanilla flavour.
origins: Though little history is given about this varietal, and none of it to arouse interest in the French Codlin, a short description did appear in the 1818 update of William Forsyth's "A Treatise on the Culture and Management of Fruit Trees." For his part, Robert Hogg lists it in the 1851 edition of his "British Pomology." Also briefly described in the Herefordshire Pomona, Volume II, 1876. No information on the genetics seems to be available.
harvest: Ready for harvest starting early in the fourth period.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
harvest period: 4
