identification: Medium size. Long conic. Smooth, glossy, thin skin. The base colour is yellow which is extensively covered with a red wash and darker red striping. The eye is closed and set in a narrow, deep basin surrounded by a lightly knobbed crown. The stem is long, slender and set in a moderately wide cavity with little or no russetting. Turns waxy in storage.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine grained. Juicy, spicy, slightly sweet-tart.
origins: Germany. First described in 1776, given its current name in 1859
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright pyramid shaped. No recommended for espalier. Grows best in rich, warm soils.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fourth period.
notes: Resembles the Princess Noble to a degree that it has been suggested that it may be related.
