identification: Medium tending to large, sometimes very large. Conic with ribbed sides. Green skin blushed red with a pattern of stripes on the sun exposed face. Some russetting.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Fine-grained, firm. Aromatic bittersweet with a touch of tartness. Flavour improves in storage.
uses: Eaten fresh, as apple sauce and for baking. Also considered a cider apple.
origins: Originated as a chance seedling, possibly of the Prinzenapfel, sometime in the late 1800s on the River Elbe island of Finkenwerder (Island of the Finches) on the outskirts of Hamburg in northern Germany. Though widely grown during the early 1900s, it has become hard to find since the 1960s.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright. Does well in moist soils and wind swept locations.
cold storage: Keeps four months in cold storage.
