type: Cider, Dessert, Juice
synonyms: Red Pippin
summary: An excellent fresh-eating apple and great for apple juice.
identification: Medium size, flat round. Yellow skin over which are red and orange flushes and stripes. Some russeting may be present. Very smooth and somewhat thick skin. The stem is long and slender.
characteristics: The flesh is cream to white, fine-grained, crisp and often very juicy. In terms of flavour, it is a milder, less complex version of the Cox's Orange Pippin, but refreshingly sweet and tangy.
origins: Developed in 1972 by Dr. Frank Alston at the East Malling Research Station in Kent (U.K.), by crossing a Cox's Orange Pippin (female parent) with an Idared (male parent). Seedling selection from the cross-pollination was carried out in 1973. It received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Merit in 1987.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading spur bearer suitable in areas of late frosts. Young trees have drooping branches. Heavy cropper that bears thinning for larger apple size. Tends to be biennial. Responds well to training for espalier.
cold storage: Keeps three months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Somewhat susceptible to fireblight.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the second half of the fourth period. The fruit generally hangs well on the tree, but it does have a tendency to drop fruit suddenly in periods of drought.
