Fearn’s Pippin

identification: Small to medium, round and flattened at the ends. Skin base colour is greenish yellow over which is a bright red flush and broken red stripses covering more than three quarters of the apple. Patches of russet and grey lenticels over the whole apple. The stem is short and set in a wide, shallow cavity.
characteristics: Flesh is white, firm and juicy. Sweet?sharp. Hints of raspberry when fully ripe. Keeps about three months in cold storage.
uses: Cooking and fresh eating.
origins: Raised in Mr Bagley s garden in Fulham, London, before 1780. Highly prized in Victorian England and widely grown around London and in Kent until its decline in popularity in the 1890’s
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. Ready for harvest in the first half of the FOURTH period.
