identification: Large size. Round to round flattened. Ribbed. Flat at the base. Skin colur is green to yellow with ripeness, washed brownish red covering one ,quarter of the apple on the sun exposed face. Wide broken, red stripes. The eye is medium size and open set in a moderately deep and wide basin. The stem is short and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity
characteristics: Flesh is creamy white, soft and juicy. Highly acidic when used early but flavourful and softer when allowed to ripen.
uses: Early apples make a tart and tasty apple sauce. Fully ripened Encores are exellent for pies.
origins: First recorded in 1906. Raised by Charles Ross, Head Gardener at Welford Park, Newbury, Berkshire. Introduced by Cheal of Crawley, Sussex. Thought to be a Warner s King X Northern Greening. Received RHS. Award of Merit in 1906 and RHS.
