summary: A highly regarded russeted dessert apple. Popular in Britain during Edwardian times and still today a valued garden apple.
identification: Medium size.Round tending to conic. Green base colour becomes golden with ripeness. Sometimes a pale brownish blush on the sun exposed side. Russet patches.
characteristics: Cream-coloured flesh. Fine-grained, firm and crisp when first harvested, becoming tender and rich in storage. Sweet-sharp, nutty, fruit-drop flavour develops after harvest.
origins: Raised by Wilson, head gardener to the Duke of Devonshire at Holker Hall, Cumbria (U.K.) in 1830s. Described by British pomologist Robert Hogg in the 1860 version of his "The Fruit Manual." May be related to the Ashmead's Kernel.
