identification: Medium to small, round conic shape. Pale green to yellow base colour which is almost completely blushed deep red and marked with faded, light?coloured lenticels. The surfaced develops a thin, waxy bloom as the fruit ripens. The stem is shor and thin, set in a moderately deep cavtiy with minimal russeting. The semi?open calyx (eye) is medium large and set in a medium wide basin.
characteristics: The creamy white flesh is moderately firm. Juicy, sweet with low acidity and a slight almond flavour. The peel sometimes is somewhat astringent. It tends to lose flavour and texture quickly becoming soft and mealy even in cold storage.

origins: Drakenstein was developed by Dr. N????? Hurter in 1958 at the Fruit and Fruit Technology Research Institute (n called the Agricultural Research Council) in Hatfield, Preto (South Africa). The seed parent was Selection 3/2 (Wemmershoek crossed with Granny Smith) and the pollen used came from Richared. Initially known as Selection E12/14 the variety was released in 1980.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Ready for harvest over a two to three week span starting thr weeks before the first period but it has a marked tendancy t produce fruit every other year. Shaded fruit inside the cano does not colour up well. Fruit tends to drop as it ripens, particularly so in periods of gusty winds. Susceptible to sc and mildew.
