origins: Open pollinated seedling, parentage unknown. Found growing by Donald Wyman in the Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum and deemed worthwhile for use as an ornamental crab. Selected in 1943 and introduced in 1948.
cultivation: Dense, upright spreading tree that grows to about six metres tall. Semi-weeping. Likes full sun. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 4 to 7.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to scab and fireblight.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
flowers: Semi-double, often double, rose pink, large. Flowers annually.
foliage: Green in summer, yellow and green in autumn.
fruit: Orange yellow, very small. Fruit tend to drop once ripe.
