identification: Medium size, round and tending to conicl, five well pronounced ridges, often with one substantially larger than the other. The skin colour is green with russet dots. Smooth. The eye is large and partly open, set in a deep and narrow basin which is surrounded by an irregularly knobbed crown. The stem is short, set in a medium cavity alongside a fleshy swelling.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, soft, juicy and tart.
uses: Makes a tart and flavourful sauce.
origins: First described in 1883. Thought to originate from th Midlands. Grown around Southwell, Nottinghamshire, in the 19th century and Cambridgeshire in the1930 s.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading, spur bearer.
cold storage: Does not store well and needs to be used soon after picking.
