summary: A Rambo-style, American striped apple that dates back to the late 1700s; juicy and aromatic. It lends itself best to eating out of hand and for making apple pies.
identification: Medium size tending to large, round and flattened, often ribbed. The skin is tough, smooth and the base colour is yellowish-green, washed bright red and lightly russeted. The stem is medium length and slender, set in a deep and wide cavity which is russetted, often with rays extending over the shoulder. The calyx is medium size, sometimes larger and closed, set in a medium deep basin which is ribbed.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, firm, coarse-grained and tender. Juicy and aromatic.
origins: Thought to have originated as a chance seedling in Maryland (U.S.A.) in the late 1700s. It was acknowledged in the catalogue of the Horticultural Society of London in 1831. In the 1817 version of "A View of the Cultivation of Fruit Trees" the American horticulturalist William Coxe stated that "The Domine was imported from England..." however, this is widely considered to be incorrect.
