summary: Rich red skin and conic shape make this an elegant apple, but it is not much in demand. Difficult to obtain beyond Lincolnshire.
identification: Medium size and conic shape, lightly ribbed faces. The base colour is green, washed bright red and marked with a pattern of fine, darker stripes. The skin develops a waxy texture as it matures.
characteristics: The flesh is white and coarse-grained. Crisp and sharp-tasting.
uses: Cooking apple, makes a tart sauce. Looses shape in cooking. Sharp flavour.
origins: Grown in 1898 from a pip of unknown parentage by William Ingall, nursery owner in Grimoldy, Lincolnshire near Louth, (U.K.). Introduced in 1911.
