Detroit Red
type: Culinary
synonyms: Black Apple, Black Detroit, Crimson Pippin, Detroit, Detroit Black, Grand Sachem, Large Black. The Red Detroit is a different cultivar.
identification: Large to very large. Round, cylindrical with well-defined ribbing. The skin is thick and tough, red in colour with blushes varying between crimson and purple. The colouration can range from bright red to a purple black.
characteristics: The flesh is white, sometimes stained red just under the skin. Coarse, juicy and aromatic. Sweet-sharp. Thick-skinned.
origins: According to S.A. Beach in "The Apples of New York" (published 1905): "This is supposed to have been brought into the neighbourhood of Detroit (U.S.A.) by the early French settlers and thence disseminated. It was introduced into Ohio and western New York before the middle of the last century." A.J. Downing provides the same origins in "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America" (published, 1853), adding that "There is little doubt that, like many other varieties grown at the west, and supposed to be indigenous there, this will yet prove to be some old variety." Downing lists it as "Detroit" with the synonyms "Red Detroit" and "Black Detroit." It is usually dated to have emerged before 1790. There is no record of its parentage.
