Darling Pippin

synonyms: Darling. It was referred to as Darnel Pippin in the 1700s.
identification: Medium size, round conic. The skin is bright yellow and profusely marked with indented, small, whitish lenticels. The stem is short and slender. The calyx is small and closed, set in a shallow, ridged basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, firm, crisp, sweet and juicy. Refreshingly tart.
uses: A prized eating apple.
origins: Mentioned by George Lindley in his 1796 edition of "A Plan of an Orchard," but its origins may be earlier than that according to British pomologist Robert Hogg in the 1851 edition of "British Pomology." He states that horticulturalist John Rea alluded to it in 1665 in his "Flora, seu de Florum Cultura" calling it "a large gold yellow apple, of excellent, quick, something sharp taste, and bears well."
