summary: Capable of growing to a large size, this apple can survive cold winter conditions and still capable of producing a heavy crop come summer. A good choice for a hobby orchard or a farm-gate product. Requires thinning every year.
identification: Large, round. The base colour is yellow, over which is a deep red wash. The stem is long and slender.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy-yellow, crisp, firm and fine-grained. Sweet-sharp.
origins: A cross of Wealthy with Whitney Crab, developed by the United States Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota (U.S.A.). Tested as Mandan 42-12 and introduced as Dakota in 1965.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading. Works well for u-pick operations and and backyard plantings. The tree needs to be thinned to avoid a heavy crop that can result in apples that are smaller than they should be.
cold storage: Keeps almost a month in cold storage.
harvest: Ready for harvest starting in the middle of the fourth period. Pick them just as the skin base colour starts to change from green to tan.
