identification: Small, round. Completely washed dark red with russetting.
characteristics: The fruit is sometimes used for making juice.
origins: Described in the 1970 issue of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's "History, Progeny, and Locations of Crabapples of Documented Authentic Origin" as being an open pollinated seedling found among a group of seedlings at the water works in Des Moines, Iowa (U.S.A.) in 1939. Introduced by Wayside Gardens of Mentor, Ohio in 1952.
cultivation: Vigorous. Upright, rounded shape. Grow to about 5 metres in height at maturity.
vulnerabilities: Highly susceptible to fire blight.
notes: Flowers start as deep red buds and open to deep pink, usually with a lavender star at the base of each petal.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
flowers: Reddish blossoms, semi double
foliage: reddish green in spring and summer
fruit: Small, bright red.
