identification: Medium size to large, round and slightly flattened. Skin base colour is pale green becoming pale yellow with ripeness. Three quarters of the apple is flushed brownish red marked with short broken, bright red stripes. The eye is medium size and partly open, set in a medium deep, narrow basin. The stem is somewhat short and medium thick, set in a deep and narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh has a greenish tinge and is somewhat coarse?grained. Dry and acidic when first picked but the tartness mellows with storage.
uses: A good cooking apple.
origins: Discovered growing in a small cottage garden at Tilgate, near Crawley, Sussex (UK) in about 1870 and introduced to the market by the nursery. J. Cheal & Sons, of Crawley in 1906. It received the RHS Award of Merit in 1912. shows distinct similarity to a French variety called Nouvell France.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright, spreading spur bearer. Ideal for smaller gardens. Heavy crops
