summary: Antaninis//Antonovka a collective term for late-season apples, and the Common Antaninis is the most popular among them. Used primarily for kitchen purposes, and generally too tart for fresh eating.
identification: Medium to large size. Round tending to round conic, often irregular, bluntly ribbed. The skin is smooth, yellowish-green maturing to bright yellow. The calyx is small and closed, set in a funnel shaped basin. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep and narrow, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, coarse-grained and firm. Juicy, somewhat acidic, marginally sweet.
uses: High pectin levels makes this a good apple for jellies. Pairs well with aged hard cheeses. Used for cider. Also used for hardy rootstock.
origins: Widely grown throughout western Russia as well as surrounding areas.
