identification: Small to medium size, conic with slightly angular sides. The base colour is pale yellow, washed reddish brown on the sun exposed face and marked with raised lenticels which are yellowish on the sun-exposed face, green on the shaded face. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a shallow, wide and pleated basin. The stem is very short and stout, fully set in a deep, wide cavity, usually with no russeting.
characteristics: Flesh is white, often with a reddish stain under the skin. Firm, crisp and juicy and sweet-sharp. Strawberry flavours.
uses: Dessert, cider
origins: Arose in Kent (U.K.) and listed by London area nurseries as early as 1670. Grown commercially in Kent until the 19th century.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright-spreading spur bearer. Produces heavy crops but flowers must be thinned in order to get fruit of adequate size.
cold storage: Keeps less than two months.
