identification: Large, ovate. The skin is yellow with patches of greenish russet and streaked with pale crimson on the sun exposed face. The stalk is short and set in a round, russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, tender, crisp, sweet and juicy with a wonderful nutty flavour.
uses: Used for fresh eating and cooking.
origins: It grew in the garden of a rented cottage in Cellar Hill near Sittingbourne, Kent (UK) during the first half of the 1800s and when it was cut down by the cottage owner in 1846, the tree was estimated to be about 50 years. Originally, it was called Pope s apple after the name of the cottager who lived there and nurtured the tree, it was renamed Cobham by the nursery owner Kirke who managed to obtain some cuttings, likely against the wishes of Pope who jealously guarded his tree. Its origins are unknown, but the fruit is so remarkably similar to to the Blenheim Pippin that there may indeed be some common ancestry.
