identification: Medium tending somewhat to large size, round to round-conic. The skin is medium thick and glossy. The base colour is yellow which is almost entirely washed with a bright red, occasionally red-purple. Small, inconspicuous Extensive patches of russet can sometimes radiate from the stem cavity. Short stem, large and open calyx.
characteristics: Flesh is yellowish cream, extremely crisp, juicy, somewhat tart and distinctly spicy.
uses: Intended as a fresh eating apple but also makes a tasty, refreshing juice.
origins: Developed starting in 1971 by the cooperative breeding program between Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Universities (U.S.A.) by crossing two scab resistant breeding varieties -- PCFW2-134 and PRI669-205 -- which include Rome Beauty. Melba, Red Rome, Jonathan and Golden Delicious. First fruited in 1979 and introduced in 2006.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree, Bears fruit on branches rather than spurs. Fruit set needs to be thinned to reduce the tendency to bear fruit every other year.
cold storage: Keeps three months but flavours tend to disintegrate with time. A greasy feel develops in storage.
vulnerabilities: Genetically resistant to scab, somewhat resistant to blight and mildew, but prone to rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest early in the fourth period. There seems to be no tendency to pre-harvest drop.
