identification: Medium tending to large and conic varying to round conic. Some ribbing is apparent on the sides. The skin base colour is green to pale yellow at maturity and washed with an orange red blush, Over which are short, scattered red stripes over the entire surface. Sparsely marked with whitish lenticels. The stem is fairly stout and short, set in a deep, narrow, russetted cavity. The calyx is medium size and, for the most part, open, set in a narrow, shallow basin which is usually pleated.
characteristics: The flesh is white with red stains next to the skin, firm, crisp and coarse textured. Juicy and brisk.
uses: A good fresh-eating apple.
origins: According to S.A. Beach in "The Apples of New York, Volume 2" (published 1903), this apple is "A Russian variety of the Oldenburg type imported for the Iowa Agricultural College (U.S.A.) by J. L. Budd." It was likely one of 252 varieties collected in Russia for introduction to the United States in an effort to develop additional hardy varieties.
cultivation: The tree is hardy, vigorous and spreading. It starts to produce apples quite young and produces good crops every other year.
