characteristics: Crisp, tender and very juicy. Highly aromatic with a spiciness. excellent dessert apple; exceptional old American variety, once near extinction, now being rescued by Southmeadow Fruit Gardens
uses: Excellent eaten fresh.
origins: First reference of this variety appears to be in John Aston Warder s essential book in 1867 in which it is described as being the the very best apple. For some unknown reason, it disappeared in the early 1900s until 1996 when a lone tree was discovered in an old orchard in New Jersey. It was subsequently grafted and is now available once more, albeit on a small scale.
