synonyms: Aurora (this is also used as a synonym for 8S-69-23 , Twenty Ounce and Braeburn Joburn ), Coleman, Eighteen Ounce, Governor Seward's, Morgan's Favorite, Twenty Ounce, Wine. Twenty Ounce Pippin is not a synonym for Cayuga Redstreak or Twenty Ounce.
identification: Large to very large size, round but often misshapen. The base colour is greenish yellow and marked with heavy red stripes. Light-coloured or russet lenticels. Often with a peened skin texture. The stem is medium length and on the slender side, set in a deep and narrow cavity which is often russetted. The calyx is medium size and usually closed, set in a shallow, wide basin which is usually pleated.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Coarse-grained and firm. Juicy, slightly sweet-tart and mild.
uses: Pies and baked apples.
origins: Originated in Cayuga County, New York (U.S.A.) in the early 1800s and was first described in the June, 1844 issue of "The Magazine of Horticulture" by C.M. Hovey who listed it as Twenty Ounce and wrote "Taking all its properties, an exceedingly fine fruit. Its origin is not stated. The specimens of fruit were received from Mr. George Howland, of New Bedford, who gathered them on his farm in Cayuga Co., N.Y. It is supposed to be a native." A.J. Downing in in his 1845 edition of "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America" also lists it as the Twenty Ounce with the comment "A very large and showy apple, well known in Cayuga County, N.Y. and probably native there." No information on its parentage seems to be recorded.
cultivation: Vigorous upright, round-topped tree. Branches can be slightly weeping. Needs heavy and regular pruning to maintain air circulation. Precocious and provides annual crops. The fruit hangs well when ripe.
mutations: Collamer which is also known as Collamer Twenty Ounce . Twenty Ounce is a synonym for Cayuga Redstreak.
cold storage: Two months, progressively losing flavour and texture.
vulnerabilities: Prone to canker and fire blight.
harvest: Late in the fourth period and into the start of the fifth. Fruit holds well on tree at maturity but ripens progressively, requiring regular pickings over the course of two to three weeks.
