identification: Large, round. The base colour is green washed red and marked with darker stripes on the sun exposed face, the striping becoming more noticeable along the faded edges of the wash. The eye is small and partly open, set in a shallow and wide basin. The stem is short and slender, set in a medium deep and funnel shaped cavity.
characteristics: Juicy, sweet crisp.
uses: A cooking apple. Holds its shape when cooked but flavour tends to be quite mild.
origins: Lane s Prince Albert x Hambledon Deux Ans. This was one of 14 varieties developed by Eynsham, Oxfordshire (UK), apple breeder Frederick William Wastie (1857?1937).
