identification: Medium size tending to large. Round to round-flattened. The base colour is greenish yellow over which is a loose marbling of dull red stripes. Marked with yellow lenticels. Develops a blueish hue caused by a bloom as it begins to ripen. The calyx is medium size, open, set in a deep, puckered basin. The stem is long, extending higher than the shoulder, reddish and set in a deep, narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, sometimes with a tinge of yellow. Firm. Juicy, sweet and tangy, with rose-water fragrance.
origins: Grown in the 1840s by Colonel Carter at Mount Meigs Depot in Alabama (U.S.A.) Thought to be lost but recovered when it was discovered growing in U.K.'s National Fruit Collection by well known lost apple researcher, Lee Calhoun of North Carolina.
cultivation: Vigorous. Suitable for Hardiness Zones 6 to 8.

harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fifth period.
