identification: Small, round. The base colour is yellow over which is a red flush.
characteristics: The flesh is white with red stains, crisp. Juicy, sweet and brisk.
uses: Used for pies and sauces when pick under ripe a month or more before the first period and later eaten as a dessert apple. Also used for making cider.
origins: North Carolina, possibly before 1800, first described 1848
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Bears heavy crops but has a tendancy to produce best every other year which can be controlled by thinning to some extent.

ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
