Carmeliter Reinette

identification: Medium to large?sized, round conical, flattened at the ends, The skin is rough with a yellow background colour covered with a patchwork of russet. The stem is long and variably stout, set ina deep and often irregular basin.
characteristics: The flesh is whitish, medium fine texture tender and crisp. Juicy, sweet, slightly tart and aromatic.
origins: The first mention of this variety was by ????? Merlet in 1677 who called it the Reinette Rousse. About a century later, it was offered by the Chartreux nursery of Paris under the name Reinette des Carmes and stating that it was without question native to France. Meanwhile, in Germany, where the variety was also widely grown, ????? Diel claimed it as native that country in 1779. In 1859 Dr. ??? Lucas, Director of the Institute of Pomology in Reutlingen, Wurtenburg (Germany) capitulated by noting that while it was widely grown in Germany, it was also common in France. He further pointed out that Diel s claim or German origin was without proof and that he believed it was more likely of French origin and had been grown there since time immemorial.
