identification: Medium size. Flat and round tending to conic and ribbed. Wide and deep cavity. The skin is smooth and green washed deep red over most of the body and some broken stripes. Sometimes lightly marked with a network of russet veins. Covered with a light bloom at harvest.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy and very firm. Often stained wine red next to the skin. Juicy and sweet with an almond flavour. Sprightly.
uses: A good fresh-eating apple.
origins: Developed by Don Blair at the Federal Agriculture Research Station in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) by crossing
Melba with pollen from
Crimson Beauty . It was released in 1964.
cultivation: Hardy and moderately vigorous upright spreading tree, Bears fruit on spurs. Starts to produce fruit as early as the third year on its own roots. Tends to bear best crops every other year.
vulnerabilities: Excellent resistance to mildew and blight.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle of the third period, but ripens progressively, requiring two or three pickings.
