Captain John Broad

identification: Medium size. Round conic with pronounced ribbing. The base colour is greenish yellow, over which is a faint brownish red flush on the sun exposed surface. The calyx is small and closed, set in a shallow and wide, faintly pleated basin, surrounded by a crown. The stem is medium length, slender and set in a deep, narrow cavity which is often russetted.

uses: Primarily intended for making cider, but also used for baking.
origins: Once extensively grown in the Golant area of the Tamar Valley in the southern part of Cornwall, (U.K.).
cultivation: Very vigorous. Can be cultivated from cuttings.
