summary: Though grown primarily for ornamental purposes, this crabapple produces sweet-tart, bright red fruit about the size of a acorn that is favoured for jellies and sauces. A warm-climate variety with low chill needs.
identification: Small, about the size of acorns, oblong, bright red.
characteristics: The flesh is deep yellow to orange. Crisp and tart, flavourful.
uses: Makes a flavourful sauce and an excellent tart jelly. Suitable for canning.
origins: Originated at the Callaway Gardens in the State of Georgia (U.S.A.), southwest of Atlanta.
cultivation: Grows to about eight metres high, brushy with rounded crown. Precocious and bears heavy crops annually. Somewhat resistant to drought and prefers well-drained soils. Responds well to espallier training. Does not grow well in proximity to saltwater. Requires 600 chill hours.
vulnerabilities: Highly disease resistant, though canker can make a showing and needs to be pruned out.

notes: The fruit holds well on the tree through winter but birds and squirrels feed heavily on these crabs, to the point where fallen debris can become quite a mess on walkways and lawns.
