identification: Large, round and uneven, with ribbed faces. The skin background colour is green to yellowish-green washed pale red over which are deep red, broken stripes. Scattered brown, russetted lenticels. The stem is medium long, stout and set in a deep cavity. The calyx is open and set in a wide, shallow basin.
characteristics: Flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy and sweet with a touch of tartness. Aromatic.
origins: Listed as Red Winter Pearmain in A.J. Downing's 1857 edition of "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America" though without any clue of its origins. Charles Downing, in his 1872 update of that book states "Origin unknown. An old variety." The Downing brothers both listed Buscombe as a synonym for the Red Winter Pearmain. It is presumed that it may have originated as a seedling tree in Buscombe County, North Carolina (U.S.A.), likely in the early 1800s. Fruit explorer Carlos Manning of West Virginia is credited with locating an old Buscombe and successfully restoring the variety and is once again available through select North American nurseries.
