Breuhahn

synonyms: Breuhan, Geheimrat Breuhahn. Ocassionally seen as Geheimrat Brouhaha.
identification: Medium size and round tending to cylindric. Unless grown in particularly warm conditions, the fruit is usually yellowish green to golden yellow with a faint reddish blush and scattered striping on the sun exposed face. However, when it ripens fully on the tree, the fruit is almost completely washed a bright carmine red. The smooth skin becomes very greasy at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish, fine-grained and juicy with a sweet-tart, spicy flavour and refreshing aroma. Continues to mature and become sweeter over six weeks after harvest.
origins: Found in 1893 as a chance seedling from an open pollinated Halberstädter Jungfernapfel growing at the Horticulture Research Station, Geisenheim, Rhine (Germany). Introduced in 1934.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright pyramidal. Bears fruit on spurs as well as on one- and two-year wood. Bears heavy crops annually. Lends itself well to training as an espalier tree.
