identification: Small, round and oblate, ocassionally appearing four?sided. The skin base colour is a dull yellow blushed rusty orange, more reddish on the sun exposed face. Marbled with light brown russeting. Lenticels are sparse and small. The stalk is medium length and stout and set in a shallow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellow, fine textured andfirm. Very sweet and brisk with a spicy pineapple flavour. Lasts about three months in cold storage.
uses: A highly regarded heritage eating apple.
origins: A pippin that germinated from some discarded pressed cider pomace in 1801 and raised by Reverend John Symonds Breedon at Bere Court, Berkshire (UK). The seedling ultimately bore fruit starting in 1813 and samples were presented by William Kent to the Royal Horticulture Society in 1820.
