type: Cooking, Cider, Dessert, Juice
identification: Medium tending to large size. Round conic. The skin is thick and tough, greenish yellow, often with a red blush on the sun-exposed face. The stem is short, set in a deep, wide cavity. The calyx is large, sometime partly open, set in a moderately deep and narrow, ribbed basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, tender, melting and very juicy. Sweet-sharp and aromatic.
uses: Good dessert apple, excellent cooking apple, and lends itself to juicing and cider.
origins: A chance seedling discovered sometime in the early 1800s along the border between New York and Vermont (U.S.A.). First listed in the American Journal of Horticulture & Florist's Companion" 1866/67
cultivation: Vigorous, upright with a spherical crown. Produces heavy crops annually. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
cold storage: Keeps up to four months but best used soon after harvest.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fifth period. Needs to be handled gently because it bruises easily.
notes: Highly sensitive to bruising.
