Black Limbertwig

identification: Medium size tending to large. Round. Completely washed with dark-red and marked with light-coloured, russetted lenticels. The stem is short and somewhat slender, set in a deep, funnel shaped cavity which is often russetted. The calyx is closed and small, set in a wide and somewhat shallow basin which may be pleated.
characteristics: Yellow flesh, juicy. Sweet-sharp, spicy and aromatic.
uses: Fresh eating, apple butter, apple sauce, pies. Cider.
origins: Arose in the state of Georgia (U.S.A.) during the late 1700s or early 1800s, likely as a chance seedling from a discarded apple core. First introduced at the 1914 session of the Georgia Horticultural Society.
